"Drowned World/Substitute for Love" is a song by Madonna from her seventh studio album Ray of Light. It was released as the third single from the album on August 24, 1998.
Background[]
Madonna said that the song is about the birth of her child. The video shows her riding in a limousine being chased by photographers and arriving at a maternity ward to pick up her child. The video is shot in soft focus, possibly to satisfy fans' curiosity about the circumstances of her becoming a mother. Madonna wrote this song with a team of writers, including it's co-producer William Orbit, Rod McKuen, Anita Kerr and David Collins.
Composition[]
The song is a downtempo ballad drawing influences from jungle, drum and bass and trip hop music

Lyrics[]
I traded fame for love
Without a second thought
It all became a silly game
Some things can not be bought
I got exactly what I asked for
Wanted it so badly
Running, rushing back for more
I suffered fools
So gladly
And now I find
I've changed my mind
the face of you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
Should I wait for you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
I travelled round the world
Looking for a home
I found myself in crowded rooms
Feeling so alone
I had so many lovers
who settled for the thrill
of baskin in my spotlight
I never felt so happy
the face of you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
Should I wait for you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
mmmmmmmmmm...
oooooooooooooooo...
No famous faces, far off places
trinkets I can buy
No handsome stranger
heady danger
Drug that I can try
No ferris wheel, no heart to steal
No laughter in the dark
No one night stand, no far off land
No fire that I can spark
mmmmmmmmmmmm...
the face of you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
Should I wait for you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
mmmm...
the face of you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
Should I wait for you
my substitute for love
my substitute for love
And now I find I've changed my mind
This is my religion...
